CANYON :

  • When a gorge is very long and steep with almost vertical sides and flat bottomed river valley, it is called a canyon. eg. The Great Canyon of Colorado.

GORGE :

  • When a river flows through a region of hard rock, it forms a deep narrow valley. If bed rock is hard, a rapid and vigorous down cutting may cause steep walled 'I' shaped valley called a gorge. eg. Kali Gandaki Gorge in Himalayas.
