The modern cartesian sign conventions are:

1.An object is always placed to the left of a mirror.

2.All distances are measured from the pole of a spherical mirror.

3.The distance measured in the direction of the incident light are taken as positive and those measure in a direction opposite to the direction of incident light are taken as negative.

4.The height measured upwards and perpendicular to the principal axis of the mirror is taken as positive(+) and the distance measured perpendicular to and below the principal axis is taken as negative(-).

Mirror formula:

Since the object is always placed on the left of the mirror 'u’ is always negative.
If ‘u’ is the distance of object and 'v’ the distance of image from pole of the mirror , and 'f’ is the focal length of mirror.

1/f = 1/v +1/u

1/v+1/u=1/f is the mirror formulae where
u=distance of object from mirror
v=distance of image from the mirror
f=focal length
