Cathode rays:-

When the current starts flowing through the system of particles moving in the tube from the negative electrodes to the positive electrodes. Hence, these were called as cathode rays.

Characteristics of cathode rays:-

→ Cathode rays start form cathode and move towards anode.

→ They are not visible themselves but when they are passed through zinc sulphide coating, a bright spot is developed on the coating due to fluorescence.

→ In presence of electric and magnetic field, cathode rays show properties of negatively charged particles. Thus, cathode rays are negatively charged particles called electrons.

→ In the absence of electric and magnetic field, these rays travel in straight lines.

→ The characteristics of cathode rays do not depend on nature of gas nature of electrode material.
