★ Cathode rays:-
→ When the current starts flowing through the system of particles moving in the tube from the negative electrodes to the positive electrodes. Hence, these were called as cathode rays.
★ Characteristics of cathode rays:-
→ Cathode rays start form cathode and move towards anode.
→ They are not visible themselves but when they are passed through zinc sulphide coating, a bright spot is developed on the coating due to fluorescence.
→ In presence of electric and magnetic field, cathode rays show properties of negatively charged particles. Thus, cathode rays are negatively charged particles called electrons.
→ In the absence of electric and magnetic field, these rays travel in straight lines.
→ The characteristics of cathode rays do not depend on nature of gas nature of electrode material.
