A cell is a single electrical energy source which uses chemical reactions to produce current.
It converts stored chemical energy into electrical potential energy which produces current.
Types of Cells:
There are 2 types of cells namely Primary cell and Secondary cell.
Primary Cell:
- These are the cells where the redox reactions proceed in only one direction.
- The reactants in these cells are consumed after a certain period of time, rendering them dead.
- A primary cell cannot be used once the chemicals inside it are exhausted.
- Example: Dry cell - It is the household battery that is commonly used to power TV remotes, clocks, and other devices.
Secondary Cell:
- These types of cells can be recharged after use by passing current through the electrodes in the opposite direction, i.e. from the negative terminal to the positive terminal.
- Example: Lead storage battery that is used in automobiles and inverters can be recharged after some time.
