- The first description of Centrosome was given by van benden in 1880
- The term 'Centrosome' was coined by boveri in 1881
- It is found in cytoplasm near the nucleus in animal cell and certain lower plants, however, it is absent in seed plants, prokaryotes and amoeba.
- The radiating structure comprises, astral -rays, the centrosphere and two small bodies called diplosomes.
- The wall of each centriole has nine triplets of microtubules arranged in the circle.
- RNA and DNA have also been observed in them .
- They help in spindle formation during cell division of animal cell.
