The characteristics of an authoritarian government are as follows:

1. Laws and Policy

The size of the legislature is small as all legislative and political choices are given to one person (autocracy) or a small group (oligarchy).
Leaders do not need consent from their people(i.e. they are not elected into power). Also a constitution rarely exists in an authoritative government.

2. Control of the Press

All forms of media are controlled by the government. There are legal penalties for anti government speech in an authoritarian government.

3. Political Parties
There is a strict restriction of political views and platforms that differ from those of the authoritarian government so not to undermine political control. There is only one political party that serves to provide a veil of legitimacy to an illegitimate government.

4. Transition of Power
There are no regular, free and open elections in this form of government. The constitutional freedoms are not guaranteed as often times there is no constitution to even speak of.
Leaves room for military dictatorships through seizure of power. All this translates to having unstable political stability.
