what are characterstics of malaria.
Answers
General Characteristics
Of the four species that infect humans, P. falciparum and P. vivax cause the most infections, and P. falciparum causes the most severe, potentially fatal malaria. Each of the four species has a distinctive appearance under the microscope, and produces a different pattern of symptoms. (4)
Infection with P. falciparum can develop suddenly and cause several life-threatening complications. The infection is almost always curable if proper treatment is received quickly. P. vivax is the most geographically widespread species, and produces less severe symptoms. However, relapses can occur for up to 3 years. P. malariae infections can remain in the blood for very long periods, possibly decades, without ever producing symptoms. An infected person with no symptoms can infect others through blood donation or mosquito bites. P. ovale is rare, generally occurring in West Africa. This species can also cause relapses
