Chondrocytes, or chondrocytes in lacunae, are cells found in cartilage connective tissue.

They are the only cells located in cartilage.

They produce and maintain the cartilage matrix, which is a type of lake in which the chondrocytes swim.

Chondrocytes are round with indistinct cytoplasmic borders and small, dark nuclei with perinuclear clearing (Figure 15-2). Benign chondrocytes typically demonstrate regular, albeit darkly staining, nuclei that are too small to make out nuclear detail at intermediate (200X) magnification.
