Cohesion forces ( or cohesion attraction) is the property by the virtue of which similar molecules stick together due to mutual attraction.

In other words, this force refers to the tendency of 2 similar molecules to prevent separation.

Classical example of cohesion forces are as follows

  • Sticking of 2 water molecules in the xylem of plants
  • Attachment of Mercury molecules in a thermometer.

Adhesion forces is the property by which 2 different types of molecules are attracted and attach to one - another.

Classical example of adhesion forces are as follows

  • Attachment of water molecules to the xylem cells while being transported in plants.
  • Attachment of water in a glass tube.
