The "compound words" are formed by writing together "two separate words" that "combined to make a new word" which would have a "distinct meaning".  

The compound words are formed in three ways:

a.        As open compound words which are "spelled as two words" such as school bus.

b.        As closed compound words in which words are "joined to create a new word" such as newspaper.

c.        As Hyphenated compound words in which "two words are joined" with a hyphen such as well-known.
