The conditions that are necessary for any fuel to burn are:-
- Existence of a combustible substance: Combustion is only likely if the substance is combustible, which means that the substance which can burn. Examples of combustible substances are wood, paper, kerosene oil, straw, match stick etc.
- Existence of a supporter of combustion: Sufficient supply of a supporter of combustion example oxygen is necessary for combustion.
- Attainment of ignition temperature: A substance can only commence burning after it has obtained a specific minimum temperature. The temperature at which a substance can burn in the presence of air is called its ignition temperature. A substance will not be able to catch fire if it has a lower temperature than its ignition temperature.
