Answer:
COVALENT COMPOUND :-
A covalent compound is a molecule formed by covalent bonds, in which the atoms share one or more pairs of valence electrons.
Example :-
Methane (CH₄), Water(H₂O), etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF COVALENT COMPOUNDS:-
- Covalent compounds are formed by mutual sharing of electrons. (as in NH3)
- Covalent compounds are made up of molecules.
- Covalent compounds are usually liquids or gases. (E.g. CH4, C2 H6, NH3 )
- Covalent compounds are soluble in non-polar solvents like benzene or carbon tetrachloride and in-soluble in polar solvents like water.
- Covalent compounds generally have low melting and boiling points.
- Covalent compounds are bad conductors of electricity.
POLAR AND NON POLAR SOLVENTS :-
- => Polar solvent is a type of solvent that has large partial charges. Water is a popular example of a polar solvent.
- => Non-polar solvents are liquids or solvents that do not have partial charges. Some of the examples of non-polar solvents include organic compounds [which you'll study in class 10.]
#Non-polar solvents cannot dissolve polar compounds since no opposite charges exist and the polar compound is not attracted.
