Crumbs are the large chunks or cluster of soil, which may be of various shapes and sizes.

The sizes of the pores inside these crumbs depend mainly on the sizes of the crumbs. When these crumbs are too large, these pores let the free passage of air and water through them, this the water drains off very fast from the soil and leaves the soil dry.

So these crumbs should be broken down into smaller pieces of ideally 1-5 mm each, which keep the soil adequately moist and good for plant health.
