Cryoprotectants lower the melting point of water on dissolving in it and hence protect the cells. Ethylene glycol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), glycerol, etc., are some commonly used cryoprotectants. These are sometimes known as “antifreeze” when applied outside the cryobiology.
