Cyclone:- A cyclone is a huge revolving storm caused very high speed winds blowing around a central area of very low pressure in the atmosphere is called cyclone.
The damage caused by a cyclone :-
1) The cyclone brings with them extremely high speed winds which cause a lot of destruction. The tremendous force of high speed winds accompanying a cyclone can topple trees, electric poles, telephone poles and vehicles; damage houses; and property. The strong winds of cyclone produce powerful water waves in the sea and push sea water towards the shore even if the cyclone is hundreds of km away.
2) The extremely low pressure in the eye of cyclone lifts the water surface of the sea upwards to a height of 3 to 12 meters. The rising sea water appears like a water- wall moving towards the shore. This force and causes wide spread flooding of low- laying costal areas. The fast moving flood waters brought in by a cyclone, destroy roads and railway tracks, wash away vehicles, damage houses, drown peoples and animals, property. The flood caused by cyclone also reduce the fertility of soil in the cyclone hit areas. This is because the fertile top soil is washed away by flood waters brought by cyclone.
3) Cyclones bring with them torrential rains. The continuous heavy rain brought by cyclone may further worsen the flood situation in the area. This increase the problem of cyclone affected people.
4) The flood caused by cyclones pollute drinking water sources. Drinking of polluted water spreads water- borne diseases ( like typhoid and dysentery). These diseases kill more people in the cyclone affected area.
