In algebra, a decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is separated by a decimal point. The dot in a decimal number is called a decimal point. The digits following the decimal point show a value smaller than one.

ADDING DECIMALS

To add decimals, follow these steps: Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up. Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length (see below for why that is OK) Then add, using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer.
