"a" and  "an" are indefinite articles.
"the" is definite article.

I am holding a pen.    The pen  , I am holding in my hand...

Here in the first sentence, I am referring to a pen...some pen...any pen...
In the second sentence,  I am referring to  that pen which I am holding, as mentioned in the  first  sentence....
