A disease in which the function or structure of the affected tissues or organs changes for the worse over time. Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer disease are examples.

Like your shoes, your body takes a beating every day. Over time we age and our joints, muscles, and bones wear out. However, unlike this normal process of aging, degenerative diseases speed up the wear and tear, causing tissue to degrade faster than normal. This would be as if you took some sandpaper and mud to your shoes, wearing them out much faster than normal.
