Detergents

Explanation:

Detergents are ammonium or sulphurated salts of long chain carboxylic acid (COOH).

Merits:

Detergents are strong cleansing agents and can lather in hardwater too. They are very effective in removing dirt and oil. Detergents do not form scum.

Demerits:

They are not biodegradable. They are a bit rough on the cloth and not suitable for skin.

Even in hardwater, detergents can form lather because the calcium and magnesium salts of detergents are soluble in water. They are very effective in removing dirt and oil, both in hard and soft water.
