Detergents are formulated products containing either sodium salts of alkyl hydrogen sulphates or sodium salts of long chain alkyl benzene sulphonic acids. There are three types of synthetic detergents, anionic detergents, cationic detergents and nonionic detergents.

  • (1) Anionic detergents are sodium salts of long chain alkyl sulphunic acids or long chain alkyl substituted benzene sulphonic acids.
  • 2) Cationic detergents are quaternary ammonium salts having one long chain alkyl group.
  • (3) Nonionic detergents are ethers of polyethylene glycol with alkyl phenol or esters of polyethylene glycol with long chain fatty acid.
