A diagonal is a line segment that connects two vertices of a polygon that are not consecutive ( already connected).
In the pentagon above, vertex A is consecutive (already connected) to both vertex B and vertex E, but it is not consecutive (connected) to Vertex C or vertex D, so AC and AD are both diagonals.
