Diamagnetic materials are repelled by a magnetic field; an applied magnetic field creates an induced magnetic field in them in the opposite direction, causing a repulsive force. In contrast, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials are attracted by a magnetic field.

Diamagnetic substance:

  • An atom that has no permanent magnetic dipole moment is determined as a diamagnetic substance.
  • If an outside magnetic field is utilised to a diamagnetic substance such as bismuth a weak magnetic dipole moment is induced in the direction opposite the applied field.
  • These are the substances which are repelled in magnetic field.
  • On these substances, magnetic force acts from the high-intensity region to the lower intensity region.
  • In these substances, a small magnetic moment is induced in a direction opposite to the direction of the applied external magnetic field.
  • For diamagnetic substances, magnetic permeability is positive but less than one.
  • The magnetic susceptibility of diamagnetic substances is small and negative.
  • Example of diamagnetic substances are Ne, Ar,Kr e.t.c
