Tributaries-

join to make a river.
Usually (not always), they join in upper and middle course of a river
Sometimes deposition , sometimes erosion of land.
Lands between them are susceptible to floods which may or may not be necessarily disastrous.
Mining activity may take place around it.
Little extent of fertile flood land in comparison to distributaries.
Eg- Ganga has many tributaries like son, yamuna, gandhak, sind etc

Distributaries —

When a river divides
Usually due to sedimentation as river gets saturated with sediments.
On the lower course of rivers.
Between them is flood plain that may be far and wide.
Support human cultivation to a great extent.
Crops- from rice to jute.
Mining is very unlikely.
Humid climate.
Devastating floods
Icchamati, Bhairab and Hoogley rivers are some major distributaries of Ganga.
