Difference Between Primary Memory & Secondary Memory


  • Primary memory is directly accessible by Processor/CPU.
  • Secondary memory is not directly accessible by CPU.

  • Main memory

  • Instructions or data to be currently executed are copied to main memory.
  • Data to be permanently stored is kept in secondary memory.

primary memory are the main memory of the computer system
secondary memory is the auxiliary memory
the data and instructions are erased as soon as the computer system is switched off in primary memory
data and instructions are stored for further use in secondary memory
