Surface irrigation is where water is applied and distributed over the soil surface by gravity.

Subsurface  Irrigation is a technology designed specifically for subsurface irrigation in all soil textures from desert sands to heavy clays.

Sprinkler or overhead irrigation water is piped to one or more central locations within the field and distributed by overhead high-pressure sprinklers or guns.

Drip irrigation is a type of micro-irrigation system that has the potential to save water and nutrients by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either from above the soil surface or buried below the surface.

The differences between surface, sub-surface, drip and overhead irrigation is the manner in which water is applied and the machinery used.

Explanation:

  • Surface irrigation occurs where the water is distributed across the entire land. Subsurface type of irrigation occurs where all kinds of soil types receive water that is needed by them.
  • Overhead irrigation occurs where water is sprayed from the types of machinery located in specific regions in the field and is controlled by the high-pressure guns and sprinklers situated overhead.
  • Lastly, drip irrigation occurs when water is dropped in a gradual manner to the plant roots either from deep inside the soil or from an above height.
