Dinoflagellates:

 It is one of the major groups of the kingdom Protista which includes diatoms.

 Mostly marine and photosynthetic.

 Appear yellow, green, brown or red depending on amount of pigment present in their cells.

 Red dinoflagellates (e.g. Gonyaulax) undergo rapid multiplication and make the sea appear red (red tides).

 Cells are covered by rigid plates made up of cellulose.

 Some dinoflagellates release toxins which may even kill other organisms.
