DINOFLAGELLATE :

  • TAGLINE :

Their common name is ' Dinophyceae ' or ' Pyrophyta '

  • HABITAT :

They are exclusively marine

  • BODY ORGANISATION AND CELL STRUCTURE :

Body is covered with thick layer of cellulose and pectin which is known as Theca or Lorica . They also contain two flagella which are different to each other , this condition is known as Heterokont condition . Two flagella are present at 90° and produce whirl movement .

  • NUTRITION :

They contain chlorophyll a , c , beta carotene , alpha carotene ans xanthophyll and perform photosynthesis which develops normal carbohydrate .

  • REPRODUCTION :

  1. Asexual : It occurs by normal cell division .
  2. Sexual : It occurs by isogamy and anisogamy .

  • LIFE CYCLE :

They are haploid , therefore , they have haplontic life cycle and zygotic meiosis .

  • ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE :

  1. They show bioluminescence when they ar present in sea . Example : Noctiluca .
  2. They develop red tides near the sea . Example : Gonyolax .

Answer:

Dinoflagellates:

These organisms are mostly marine and photosynthetic. They appear yellow, green, brown, blue or red depending on the main pigments present in their cells. The cell wall has stiff cellulose plates on the outer surface. Most of them have two flagella; one lies longitudinally and the other transversely in a furrow between the wall plates.

example: Gonyaulax, Noctiluca.
