With lower biodiversity, if you lose one species, it will have a bigger effect on the ecosystem. Lets say there is an area with extremely low biodiversity: one species of plant, a species of herbivore that eats that plant, and a species of carnivore that eats that herbivore. Everything is going great, with the plants growing, the herbivores eating the plants, and the carnivores eating the herbivores. Suddenly, a disease hits that plant, quickly spreading and killing off all that species of plant in an area. The herbivores now have nothing to eat so they die off. With no herbivores, the carnivores have nothing to eat, and they die off. The whole ecosystem is now wiped out thanks to the disease that hit that one species of plant.
