Apartheid was a system of legal racial separation that had complete control of the republic of South Africa from 1948 until 1993. The mechanisms used by apartheid were set in place and before its creation and South Africa is still dealing with this problems. Under apartheid, various races were separated into different regions, and discrimination against people of color was not only acceptable, but also legally correct, with white people having full priority on housing, jobs, education, and political power. Even when South Africa was heavily criticized constantly for the system, it was not until 1991 that the legal system of apartheid began to fall down, and in 1993 was the moment where it finally came down.

Nelson Mandela became the most recognized icon of liberation in this modern time, of course in Africa but also in other places where racism was very strong, Like in America. He was compered with other symbols of this cause of liberation like Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. Nelson Mandela set an example not only to the non-whites around the world but for everybody. He is an example of persistence because he did what he thought that was correct and kept doing it even when he was in in the most drastic situations. He showed the world that if you think that it’s possible you could do it if you put the desire and your heart in it. He is also an example of real leader because the thing he wanted was peace for everyone.
