Eddy currents :

(a) Observed first by Foucalt in 1895.

(b)When a mass of a metal moves in

a magnetic field or when the

magnetic field through a

stationary mass of a metal

is altered, induced current is

produced in the metal.

(c) This induced current flows in the

metal in the form of closed loops

resembling whirlpool or eddies.

(d) These are known as eddy

currents or Foucault current.

(e) Direction of eddy current is given

by Lenz's law.

Applications of eddy current :

(a) Dead beat galvanometer

(b) Induction furnace

(c) Induction motors

(d) Electro magnetic brakes

(e) Speedometer
