Answer:

An electrolyte is a substance that produces an electrically conducting solution when dissolved in a polar solvent, such as water. The dissolved electrolyte separates into cations and anions, which disperse uniformly through the solvent

Characteristics:

  • Electrolytes produce ions and enable the body to function
  • If electrolyte levels are too low or too high, cell and organ functions will decline, which could lead to life-threatening conditions.
  • The main electrolytes include sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium
  • Electrolytes are salts or molecules that ionize completely in solution. As a result, electrolyte solutions readily conduct electricity.
  • Nonelectrolytes do not dissociate into ions in solution; nonelectrolyte solutions do not, therefore, conduct electricity.
