Enhancers can be located upstream of a gene, within the coding region of the gene, downstream of a gene, or thousands of nucleotides away. When a DNA -bending protein binds to the enhancer, the shape of the DNA changes, which allows interactions between the activators and transcriptionfactors to occur.

In genetics, an enhancer is a short (50–1500 bp) region of DNA that can be bound by proteins (activators) to increase the likelihood that transcription of a particular gene will occur. These proteins are usually referred to as
transcription factors.
