Epeirogeny is strictly vertical movement of a continent rather than horizontal movement that compresses it to form mountains (orogeny) or stretches it to form rifts (taphrogeny). Instead, epeirogenic movements form gentle arches and structural basins, or they lift whole regions evenly.
