To sum up, ether is a chemical with an oxygen atom bound to two alkyl groups. ... The most common type of ether is diethyl ether, which is extremely flammable and was one of the first anesthetics used in surgery. Due to its anesthetic effects, ether is also used as an illicit drug to induce sedation and euphoria.

Ether are a class of organic compounds that contain an ether group — an oxygen atom connected to two alkyl or aryl groups — of general formula R–O–R'.
A typical example is the solvent and anesthetic diethyl ether.
It is volatile and highly flammable liquid.
Depending on the groups at R and R', ether is classified into two types:
1) Simple ethers or symmetrical ethers

2) Mixed ethers or asymmetrical ethers

Ether: It is an organic compound with a pleasant smell. It is a highly flammable and colorless volatile liquid which has a functional group [-O-] in which an oxygen atom is linked with two alkyl groups or organic groups side by side.

The general formula is : R-O-R and the IUPAC name is "Alkoxy alkane"

For example : CH3-O- CH3CH3 ( Methoxy ethane ) the common name is Ethyl methyl ether.
