what are fairy rings in Agaricus?

answer

the mycelium of the agaricus is subterranean ,it has tendency to grow in all direction from the center point to form a large invisible circular colony

when mycelium become mature at tips sporophores are produced ,these appears in a circle ,these circle of mushroom are commonly called "fairy rings "

because of an old superstition that the mushroom growing in ring indicate the path of dancing fairy

the fairy rings are generally composed of dark green and light green band of grass the outer ring of probably luxuriant growth edge of mycelia attacks protons and other organic substance of soil liberating ammonia excess, this is converted into nitrate by bacteria

the inner ring of depressed growth is due to increase growth of fungus within the soil at same place this reduce growth of grass
