Red Blood Cells:

  • These are the most abundant blood cells.

  • They are bi-concave in shape.

  • They don't have nucleus.

  • RBCs contains haemoglobin.

  • In mature RBC endoplasmic reticulum is absent.

  • They have a spongy endoskeleton called stromatin.

  • Plasma membrane of RBC is called Donnan's membrane.

  • The mature RBCs also lack mitochondria, Golgi complex.

  • Single RBC is pale yellow in colour.

  • Group of RBCs has a reddish appearance.

  • In each RBC 26.5 crores molecules of haemoglobin is present.

  • RBCs play important role in transport of respiratory gases.

  • Increase in RBC count in blood is called Polycythemia.

  • Decrease in RBC count in blood is called Anaemia.
