Role of flocs in effluent treatment and their ultimate fate in sewage treatment tank
Explanation:
Flocs are groups of micro organisms (mostly bacteria) which are used are biological digesters to break down all the organic matter found in sewage. To promote the growth of such flocs, the effluent tanks are pumped with air which facilitates their grow.
They increase the decomposition rate of the sewage by breaking down the fecal matter which brings down the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) of the effluent.
The sludge consisting of the flocs settles down at the bottom of the sewage treatment tank. after a few batches of sewage are treated, the excessive sludge is removed and the remaining sludge is reused for future batches.
