Crater Lake, Iowa, is an example of a oxbow/fluvial lake. The flow of a river is usually not straight but the river bends and meanders throughout its course due to the uneven and non-uniform topography of the land. As the river flows, a number of lakes are formed by the running water and are called the fluvial lakes.

The forming of fluvial lakes  is often closely related to the development of the river and river course change. They are mainly distributed in the plain area. Owing to the influence of the rise and fall of the topography and the change of  runoff, the river course moves frequently, and forms many types of fluvial lake.
