Fossils: the dead remains of remote past organisms which do not decompose are called fossils.

By carbon dating method the process of evolution is traced. The amount of carbon present in the fossils are compared with carbon present in living organisms and hence the age of fossil is found.

Then the characteristics of the fossils are studied which depicts the relation (if any) with any organism.
