Hey Friend,
Ф What are fossils?
Fossils are naturally preserved remains of plants and animals. There are two types of fossils we know.
1. Body fossils - remains of plants and animals.
2. Trace fossils - remains of footprints, shells, traces of animals and plants.
Ф How is it formed?
When an animal or plant dies, it falls into mud or soft sand and makes an impression or mark on it. The body is gradually covered by another layer of mud or sand. Over time, the body gets degraded. The mud or sand hardens into rock preserving the impression of the body, leaving an animal or plant shaped hole in the rock.
Ф What are the uses of fossils?
Fossils help us in many ways. Some of them are -
1. to study the ancient geography of the earth, by knowing the geographical features, habitations, nature, climate etc of the particular place.
2. to study the evolution and mutations in the living organisms.
3. to get fossil fuels mainly coal and petroleum, whose by products are highly important for today's world and its economy.
Ф Where do we find fossils?
Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.
There are three types of rocks...Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed when other types of rocks are eroded away. Broken down bits of rock, called sediments, pile up in layers. Over time sediments get buried by new layers of sediments. Sometimes these sediments harden into rock. This is how sedimentary rocks are formed.
Hope it helped!
