Most liquid fuels in widespread use are derived from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals by exposure to heat and pressure inside the Earth's crust. However, there are several types, such as hydrogen fuel (for automotive uses), ethanol, jet fuel and bio-diesel which are all categorized as a liquid fuel.


Example :- Petroleum , Coal , Kerosene , Natural Gas , CNG , LPG , etc .

A combustible substance which on burning produces a large amount of heat and light is called a fuel.

For example, wood, coal, LPG etc.

\textbf{Characteristics of an }

\textbf{Ideal fuel }:

1. It should be fairly cheap and easily available.

2. It should burn at moderate rate.

3. It should not produce any poisnous and irritating fumes during burning.

4. It should leave no residue (ash) after burning.

5. It should have high calorific value.

6. It should be easy to store and transport.

7. Its ignition temperature should be above room temperature.

\textbf{Types of Fuels  }:

  1. Solid fuel : Combustible substances which are solid at room temperature are called soild fuels. For example, Coal, Coke etc.
  2. Liquid fuel : Volatile liquids which produce combustible vapour are called liquid fuels. For example, Petrol, Diesels, Kerosene etc.
  3. Gaseous fuel: Combustible gases or mixture of combustible gases are called gaseous fuels. For example, LPG, CNG etc.
