Kidney is essential for the removal of waste products. The purification of blood by removing the waste products is the primary function of kidney. Secondly, it is useful for the removal of excess fluid. It thus regulates the amount of water that is required for living by removing excess of water in the form of urine. It counter balance the minerals and chemicals like sodium, potassium, hydrogen, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and bicarbonate and also maintain the body fluid composition. Kidney also maintain blood pressure by producing different hormones which regulate the concentration of water and salt in the body. It also helps in the production of erythrocytes with the help of a hormone called Erythropoietin. It also helps to maintain healthy bones which convert vitamin D into its active form that is required for the absorption of calcium from food for the growth of teeth and bones and make them stronger.

Kidney is the major excretory organ of our body, it contains the nephrons that performs the function of filtration, the nephron is segregated into several parts such as the glomerulus, proximal convoluted tubule, distal convoluted tubule and the Henley’s loop each of it serves in the filtration of waste from the blood and the absorption of essential ions back into the body to maintain equilibrium.
