A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. However, many genes do not code for proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases. The Human Genome Project estimated that humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes.
The DNA is located in the nucleus of the cell. Genes are simply short regions of DNA which code for either a protein or RNA molecule. In eukaryotes, genes are mostly found in the nucleus of the cell, but some (13 in humans) are also located in the cell's mitochondria, in mitochondrial DNA.
