Gram stain or Gram staining, also called Gram's method, is a method of staining used to distinguish and classify bacterial species into two large groups. The name comes from the Danish bacteriologist Hans Christian Gram, who developed the technique

Gram positive and gram negative bacteria can be differentiated on the basis of gram staining named after the name of founder Hans Christian Gram. Gram positive cell walls contain a thick peptidoglycan layer with teichoic acids. Gram positive bacteria will stain purple because of their thick peptidoglycan cell wall.
