Haloalkanes and other compounds with the halogen atom bounded to either sp3-hybrdized or sp2-hybrdized carbon atoms (arryl and vinyl halides) react with magnesium metal to yeld organomagnesium haldes called grignard reagents.
Used for synthetic purpose:
Notably those with carbonyl compounds (e.g.aldehydes,ketones,esters,and acyl chlorides)with epoxides, and with halogen compounds of certain metals (e.g.zinc,cadmium,lead,mercury) to form the alkyl derivatives of those metals.
