The gymnosperms, also known as Acrogymnospermae, are a group of seed-producing plants that includes conifers, cycads, Ginkgo, and gnetophytes. The term "gymnosperm" comes from the composite word in Greek: γυμνόσπερμος, literally meaning "naked seeds". The name is based on the unenclosed condition of their seeds.

Gymnosperms :-

Gymnosperms are seed-bearing, non-flowering plants. They are more primitive than angiosperms. They include plants such as Pinus, cedar, fir, juniper, and Cycas.

Some general features of gymnosperms are as follows :-

  • They are perennial plants that grow as woody trees or bushy shrubs.

  • Vascular bundles are present, but xylem lacks vessels and phloem lacks companion cells.

  • Flowers are absent. Instead, male and female cones are found.

  • Seeds are produced naked i.e., they are not enclosed inside the fruit.
