Helen loved to read books very much. In fact, literature was a subject in which Helen was very good. Helen did not only read books in English but also in languages like German and French.

Helen immensely admired German and French writers. When she went to the Wright Humason School For The Deaf in October, 1894, she was given training in both German and French. Helen admired her German teacher Miss Reamy and made good progress in German. Helen could read the German book "Wilhelm Tell" within a year. In the Cambridge School For Young Girls, too, Helen studied German as well as French. She studied German literature extensively in college. She also read German books like "Heidi" as well as works of the famous German writers Goethe and Schiller.

Helen did not make a lot of progress in French at Wright Humason because her teacher Madame Olivier did not know the manual alphabet. However, Helen liked to read passages from French books and try to pronounce the various works. Helen studied French not only at Wright-Humason but also at the Cambridge School For Young Girls. Her favorite French writers were Moliere and Racine. She, moreover, read French books such as "Le Medicin Malgre Lui" and La Fontaine's "Fables".
