In a hydrocarbon chain, one or more hydrogen can be replaced by some elements such that the valency of carbon remains the same.In such compounds element replacing hydrogen is referred to as a heteroatom. Halogens(chlorine,bromine);Oxygen;Nitrogen and Sulphur are heteroatoms.
