What are heuristics in artificial intelligence?

Heuristic-based methods are those that are not guaranteed to find the optimal solution for a problem, but will do a satisfactory job a majority of the time.

Think of something like graph search, path planning, etc. In these cases, tractability and optimality are mutually exclusive. You kind of just need to point the search in the right general direction, and that is what heuristics are for!

Hope it helps..
