Homologous characters are those that have been formed from a common distant ancestor. For example: The limbs of dogs, humans and cats.

Analogous characters, however, are those characters  that perform the similar function but are different enough in structure to have been formed from accumulation of different characteristics in different species. Both bats and birds fly but they have extremely different organ structure.
